New Zealand will host the Australian men's and women's hockey teams in an inaugural trans-Tasman series in November.

Both Black Sticks teams will play three Tests each against the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos in Auckland.

The series will be an annual international fixture for the next four years under an agreement signed by the sport's bosses in both countries. It will alternate each year, with Canberra set as the venue for 2016 and 2018.

The series at Auckland's Lloyd Elsmore Park will comprise three double-headers on November 17, 19 and 20.

The results across all six Tests will determine the overall winners.

Hockey NZ high performance director Terry Evans says the series marks a significant milestone for both countries in what he believes will be a long-term partnership.

"Having the opportunity to play an annual event gives our Black Sticks men and women amazing experience against two of the world's best teams," he said.

"As our closest neighbours, we are excited about the prospect of building on a much closer relationship with Hockey Australia at all levels of the sport. It's a rivalry which will help our teams get stronger and more confident the more we play them."

Both nations finished without medals at the Rio Olympics.

The Australian men's and women's side exited in the quarter-finals. The Kiwi men suffered the same fate while the women's team finished fourth.
