New Zealand have opened their under-20 World Cup qualifying campaign with a hard-fought 3-0 win over the Cook Islands in Vanuatu.

Striker Myer Bevan hit a hat-trick on his international debut against a former Team Wellington coach Matt Calcott's Cook Islands energetic and disciplined outfit.

New Zealand controlled territory and possession in their opening Oceania under-20 championship match, but needed two late goals to make the scoreline reflect their dominance.

Bazeley said Bevan showed plenty of promise for the future.

"He's a real goal scorer and got himself into some good positions today. He took his chances well and I was really pleased for him."

New Zealand's second match is against Tahiti on Tuesday
