NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 17/04/2016

Black Fern Janna Vaughan marked her rugby sevens debut with a try as New Zealand opened the Canadian round of the women's world series with a 31-7 win over Spain.

Although Spain scored first, the New Zealanders hit back with tries to Katarina Whata and Portia Woodman to lead 14-7 at halftime in Langford, British Columbia.

Michaela Blyde and Vaughan both crossed early in the second half, with Stacey Waaka completing the scoring for the comfortable first-up win.

Defending series champions New Zealand will face Fiji and the United States in their remaining pool matches.

The Langford round is the fourth of five legs in the world series, with Australia having won all three previous events.

They top the ladder with 60 points to second-placed New Zealand's 46 and third-ranked Canada on 42.
