NZers to contest Nitro athletics series

Anna Grimaldi. © Atsushi Tomura/Getty Images Anna Grimaldi. A 24-strong New Zealand team will contest a three-meeting athletics series fronted by Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt beginning in Melbourne this weekend.

Bolt has selected an invitation team to compete against teams from Australia, New Zealand, England, China and Japan in a new format aimed at attracting more fans to the sport.

The series begins on Saturday at Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne, with two more meetings following on Thursday and Saturday.

The New Zealand team features a mix of current and former New Zealand champions, World University and world under-20 representatives.

The team includes two para-athletes with Rio Paralympics gold medallist Anna Grimaldi and Will O'Neill competing in the 100m events.

The format includes a three-minute distance challenge, mixed distance and gender sprint relays, javelin with an accuracy bonus and races over the non-standard distances of 60m, 150m and 300m.

There will also be elimination distance races and hurdle relays.
