New Zealand's ranking as the least corrupt country in the world is greatly valued internationally and gives the country a big advantage in trade deals, the business sector says.

The annual Corruption Perceptions Index by Transparency International has given New Zealand a score of 90 out of 100 for 2016, ranking it equal first with Denmark.

Last year it ranked fourth with a rating of 88 after previously heading the league table.

"New Zealand's reputation for honesty, transparency and justice is a great advantage in conducting international trade and other dealings," said BusinessNZ chief executive Kirk Hope.

"We need to continue to uphold our standards and institutions and maintain this enviable position."

The Public Service Association said the rating showed its members continued to perform their jobs with integrity and professionalism.

"This achievement speaks volumes as to the credibility and capacity of our public service," said PSA national secretary Glenn Barclay.

The index ranks 176 countries on a scale of zero to 100. Somalia is at the bottom of the list, scoring just 10.

Justice Minister Amy Adams said it was encouraging to see New Zealand reclaim the top spot, having held it for eight of the last 10 years.

"The result reflects New Zealand's zero-tolerance of bribery and corruption, and affirms our reputation as world leaders in this area," she said.

Ms Adams said the government had implemented a number of anti-corruption initiatives, including new bribery offences and increased penalties, fast-tracking a second phase of anti-money laundering reforms and ratifying the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.
