Adrenaline junkies will soon be able to get their fix without having to work up a sweat.

A 1.8km chairlift - the longest in the country - being built in Christchurch will transport up to 1200 people and their mountain bikes an hour to the very top of the picturesque Port Hills from the city's new Adventure Park.

The chairlift will connect visitors to walking tracks, mountain bike trails and a dual zipline or flying fox.

Adventure Park director Darron Charity says installing the chairlift has been a monumental task and the most technically challenging part of the park's construction which began in April.

New access tracks had to be etched into the rugged forest terrain to get equipment in and almost 200 cubic metres of concrete had to be flown in by helicopter.

About 33 tonnes of steel and 400 cubic metres of concrete were used to construct the two entry and exit stations as well as the 14 towers that run the length of the chairlift.

The park, which sits within a 900 acre forest, is due to open in December.
