New Zealand's top scholar is former Rutherford College student Oxana Repina.

She was handed the Prime Minister's Award for Academic Excellence at NZQA's top scholar awards ceremony on Wednesday.

Education Minister Hekia Parata says the award recognises achievement at the highest overall level of academic excellence.

"Her success is a demonstration of what can be achieved with hard work, application, and the support of schools and whanau," Ms Parata said.

Oxana received seven New Zealand scholarships, six of them at an outstanding level and in two she got top marks in the country.

She was also a gold medal winner in the International Geography Olympiad.

Prime Minister John Key presented the award at a ceremony in parliament.
