Walsh, 24, threw a New Zealand record of 21.46m in the second round but was quickly trumped by American gold-medallist Ryan Crouser, who threw 22.05m.

Fellow Kiwi Jacko Gill came in third with a throw of 20.69m.

Walsh, who threw three fouls in his six attempts, finished third behind Crouser and Joe Kovacs in last year's Rio Olympics.
