O'Connor fined but avoids major punishment

NZN 20/04/2017

Former Wallaby James O'Connor will be forced to attend behavioural awareness training alongside ex-All Black Ali Williams after escaping major sanctions following a cocaine bust in Paris in February.

The pair were each fined EUR1500 ($2100) by the Ligue Nationale de Rugby's discipline and rules commission on Thursday for behaviour likely to undermine the image and ethics of the sport, Le Figaro reports.

Williams has also lost his job at club side Racing 92, according to French media reports.

Earlier this month, Williams was also fined EUR1500 by a Paris court on the charges of purchasing cocaine. O'Connor's fine stemmed from use of the drug, not possessing it or purchasing it.

Williams, who played 77 Tests between 2002 and 2012, was charged by police for buying 2.4 grams of cocaine outside a Paris nightclub in February. O'Connor, who plays for Toulon and played the most recent of his 44 Tests for the Wallabies in September 2013, was also arrested and charged with possession.
