NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 10/04/2017

The families of soldiers buried overseas are going to be offered the chance to repatriate them.

The announcement was made on Monday by Veterans' Affairs Minister David Bennett, and represents a change of policy.

The decision to repatriate will be made by families, and the government will meet the cost.

About 100 New Zealand soldiers are reported to be buried overseas, most of them in Malaysia and Singapore but also in Japan, South Korea and Samoa.

The RSA has been urging the government to bring them home.
