Police have revealed more details about a prolonged attack on a police officer north of Auckland.

Police are still hunting 30-year-old Mansell Penetana, who fled in the aftermath of the attack on Sunday.

The officer had gone to a Parakai property to arrest Penetana, after he failed to appear in court earlier in the week on a charge of assault with intent to injure.

Penetana was arrested, but a scuffle broke out and during the attack the officer was strangled, police say.

The officer managed to break free and call for help, but Penetana fled.

Police say the officer wasn't seriously injured, but he did have some bruising to his neck and a few scrapes and bruises.

Penetana is considered dangerous and shouldn't be approached.
