Kiwi Olympic middle distance runner Hamish Carson has made a credible marathon debut, finishing ninth at a leading event in Hawaii.

Carson clocked 2hr 27min 16sec at the Honolulu Marathon, his maiden appearance over the distance coming four months after he contested the 1500m at the Rio Olympics.

The race was dominated by African runners, with Kenyan winner Lawrence Cherono sizzling to a race record 2:09.37.

A beaming Carson, 28, was delighted with his performance and the reward on offer for his finish.

"I really wanted this T-shirt," he said on Twitter.
