New Zealand two-time Olympian Nicky Samuels planned to retire from international triathlons after next year's Commonwealth Games.

"A little someone else had other ideas," Samuel wrote on her blog, confirming her immediate retirement.

The 33-year-old is pregnant with her first child, prompting her to finish a career which featured numerous podium finishes at domestic and international level, along with appearances at the London and Rio Games.

She climbed to a world ranking of four in 2014 having overcome a series of injuries but was struck down again in the lead-up to Rio, where she placed 13th.

Samuels will remain based in Wanaka and plans to switch to coaching.
