Olympic bid over for Kiwi wrestler Ford

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 8/05/2016

New Zealand won't have a wrestler at the Rio Olympics after Tayla Ford's late bid for selection came up short in Turkey.

Ford was the only Kiwi to contest the second and final qualification tournament in Istanbul, needing to reach the final to secure a women's 63kg Games berth.

The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist made a good start, beating Vietnamese opponent Pham Thi Loan by pin in her first fight.

However, the 22-year-old from Christchurch then lost in the round-of-16, going down 3-2 on points to Colombia's Leidy Izquierdo.
