Olympic qualifying odds improve for Fox

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 27/06/2016

Ryan Fox has surged 40 ranking places clear of Michael Hendry with two weeks remaining in their race to qualify for the second New Zealand men's golf spot at the Rio Olympics.

Fox climbed 35 places to 186th in the world following his runner-up finish at a Challenge Tour second-tier event in Scotland on Sunday.

It opens a gap on third-ranked Hendry, who improved eight spots to 226th in the world with his fifth placing at a Japan Golf Tour event in Ishikawa.

The two highest-ranked Kiwis on the Olympic deadline day of July 11 will qualify for Rio. World No.45 Danny Lee has one spot sewn up.

World women's No.1 Lydia Ko is likely to be joined by a second Kiwi, with either Liv Cheng (437th) or Cathryn Bristow (438th) locked in a tight ranking battle.

Sixty men and 60 women will compete at Rio but the pathway for lower-ranked players is eased by restrictions on the number of representatives allowed from each country.
