A person has died and a baby has been flown to hospital for treatment after a car crashed down a bank on State Highway 35 north of Te Araroa in the Gisborne district.

The car had five people in it when it crashed at 12.27pm on Saturday, police say.

The person died at the scene and the baby was flown to hospital.

There is no information yet on the injuries to the other people.

The serious crash unit is investigating.

It's the second road death of the Queen's Birthday holiday period, which runs from 4pm on Friday to 6am on Tuesday.

A pedestrian was killed in a collision with a car on State Highway 2, north of the Napier Airport on Friday night.

Last year there were eight fatal crashes resulting in 11 deaths, which was the worst total for the holiday weekend in 27 years.
