One person has died and another is seriously injured in a crash between a freight train and a car near Hamilton.

The crash happened at 3.20pm on Thursday at a railway crossing close to the intersection of State Highway 26 and Piako Road, outside of Morrinsville, police say.

KiwiRail's David Gordon said the driver of the 716m long freight train ferrying goods between Auckland and Tauranga was not injured in the crash and the railway crossing warnings were working.

"This is a terrible accident to occur on what is a busy stretch of line at a crossing with bells and warning lights, which our monitoring system shows were operating at the time," he said.

"KiwiRail is saddened by the loss of life and offers sincere condolences to the friends and families of those affected."

The driver has been stood down from duties and will receive support "as is usual procedure", KiwiRail said.
