The car was signalled to pull-over for a routine police stop in Porirua on Saturday night but the driver failed to do so, and instead tried to flee from officers.

Police chased the car for less than two minutes through the town before it lost control on a right-hand bend and crashed through a fence.

Both people in the car were taken to hospital but the passenger later died from their injuries.

The driver remains in hospital in a serious, but not life-threatening, condition and will face charges, police say.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority of New Zealand will be investigating the incident.
