One person has died in a two-car crash on State Highway 1 in South Canterbury, the third road death over Queen's Birthday weekend.

Emergency services were called to the collision on the corner of Barnetts Road in Morven, Waimate, on Monday evening.

Next of kin were being notified and the crash investigated, police say.

It follows two other road deaths over the long weekend.

On Saturday, a person died and a baby was flown to hospital after a car crashed down a bank north of Te Araroa in the Gisborne district.

On Friday night, a pedestrian was killed in a collision with a car on SH2, north of Napier Airport.

Last year there were eight fatal crashes over the Queen's Birthday weekend, resulting in 11 deaths, which was the worst total for the holiday weekend in 27 years.
