A man is dead and another is in a critical condition after two utes crashed on State Highway 1 in Northland.

The two men in their 20s, who were among five in the Toyota, were thrown from the vehicle when it rolled at Ohaeawai at around 10.30pm on Friday.

One man died at the scene and the other was flown to Auckland Hospital where he underwent surgery.

A teenager was taken to Bay of Islands Hospital with moderate hand injuries.

The Toyota driver and remaining passenger, and the driver of the other vehicle, were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Acting Sergeant Julian Trinder said seatbelts could save lives when cars roll.

"We implore everyone to take the time to ensure that their seatbelt is correctly fastened, before they start their journey, so they can reach their destination safely, he said.

Witnesses are urged to come forward as officers from the serious crash unit investigate the cause of the crash.

Police have not ruled out charges.
