Emergency services have recovered a person's body from the burnt-out wreckage of a car which crashed into south Auckland shops and caught fire.'

The body will next be formally identified.

"It is too early at this stage in the investigation to speculate on what may have caused the crash," said Constable Glen Carlyle.

The car was a red Ford Falcon, which crashed into shops on Station Rd, Papatoetoe, on Sunday morning.

The crash ruptured a gas main and sparking a blaze in both the car and buildings.

It took some time before the scene was considered safe enough to recover the driver's body.

Police are now appealing for any sightings of the Falcon before the crash.
