NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 3/06/2016

One person is dead following a head-on crash south of Te Kuiti.

The crash happened on State Highway 3 at Tanehopuwai on Saturday morning.

One person was killed and two were taken to Waikato Hospital, one in a serious, the other in a moderate condition, St John says.

Diversions are in place but police are asking motorists to avoid the area.

The road death is the second of the Queen's Birthday holiday weekend.

On Friday evening, a 64-year-old Kaikoura man was killed in a four-car pile-up on SH1 north of Dunedin.

The official holiday period road toll started at 4pm on Friday and runs until 6am on Tuesday. Last year five people were killed and 28 seriously injured in 96 crashes during the holiday weekend.
