A man has died and a woman suffered serious injuries after their car rolled off State Highway 7 in north Canterbury.

The crash happened about 5km north of Waikari on Thursday morning.

"The single vehicle appears to have left the road at speed, gone through a fence and rolled into a paddock," police said in a statement.

The surviving victim was flown to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries.

The road remained open.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is urging drivers to take care on the stretch of road.

No detour is available on the road, which is now being used as the main route north of Christchurch after last month's Kaikoura earthquake closed SH1.
