One person has died and another has serious injuries following a light plane crash in Otago.

The single-engine aircraft, with two people aboard, crashed at Welshman's Creek, northeast of the town, police say.

"The injured man has been taken to hospital. There are no further injuries," police said in a statement.

"Police are working to inform next of kin and our thoughts are with the friends and family of those involved."

The aircraft left Taieri on Sunday morning but never arrived at its destination of Omarama, a Rescue Coordination Centre of New Zealand spokesman says.

It had no distress beacon or flight tracking device so two helicopters were sent to retrace its flight path.

However, it was another aircraft that came across the crash site in "rolling, heavily undulating terrain", the spokesman said.
