Orion finds stricken solo yachtsman

A Polish solo yachtsman signalling for help from deep in the South Pacific Ocean is safe, an Air Force Orion crew has reported.

The 64-year-old man set off an emergency beacon 2660m east of Christchurch at 3pm on Thursday after his yacht's helm, used for steering, broke. T

he New Zealand Defence Force Orion flew over the man about 10.30am on Friday and was able to speak to him, a Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand spokesman said.

The man is unharmed and a cargo ship, diverted by the rescue centre to pick him up, is expected to arrive on Saturday morning.

His 10.6m yacht is equipped with a VHF radio and life raft, and had been headed for Cape Horn as part of an around the world journey.
