Otago albatross chick about to get name

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 29/06/2017

An albatross chick dubbed the internet's most famous is about to find out what its official name will be.

The chick hatched on Otago Peninsula in January and a webcam tracking its progress at the Taiaroa Head albatross colony has attracted hundreds of thousands of views.

In May, the Department of Conservation launched a competition to name it and received 1672 entries.

A shortlist of five was chosen for public voting: Aaran (peaked island), Laidir (strong), Maia (bravery), Raukura (feather plume) and Tumanakao (hope).

Voting closes at 5pm on Friday.

The webcam went live in January 2016 and a similar competition last year produced the name Moana for another albatross chick.
