Jimmy Neesham held his nerve with the ball in the final over as Otago pipped Northern Districts by two runs in a domestic Twenty20 thriller.

Otago notched their first win of the championship while the visitors fell to their first loss but the result was in doubt up until the final ball in Dunedin.

After a rain delay reduced the match to 15 overs each, Otago flew to 177-5, with 14 sixes making up nearly half their total. Neil Broom scored 57 and Neesham an unbeaten 42 off 16 balls.

Opener Dean Brownlie's 52 off 26 balls left Northern Districts requiring 16 off the last over with three wickets in hand.

Neesham (2-26) was smacked for a four and a six by fellow Black Caps allrounder Mitchell Santner before the run out of both Santner (29) and Scott Kuggeleijn left No.11 Ish Sodhi requiring a six off the final ball.

He could only manage a four leaving Northern on 175-9.
