Investigations are due to begin after a light plane crash that killed one person and seriously injured another in Otago.

The single-engine aircraft, with two people aboard, crashed at Welshman's Creek, northeast of Middlemarch on Sunday, police say.

Investigators are travelling to the crash site and will be at the scene on Monday afternoon, a Civil Aviation Authority spokeswoman says.

The aircraft left Taieri on Sunday morning but never arrived at its destination of Omarama, a Rescue Coordination Centre of New Zealand spokesman says.

It had no distress beacon or flight tracking device so two helicopters were sent to retrace its flight path.
