More than 100 students are expected to gather in the Octagon in central Dunedin on Friday night to increase awareness of the problem of homelessness and to raise funds for the Dunedin Night Shelter Trust.

The inaugural Sleep Out last year raised more than $12,000 and helped the trust to buy its premises in Lees St.

University volunteer co-ordinator Sze-En Watts says the event is an example of what students can do for their community.

To help participants through a freezing night, there will be performances from musicians and other activities.
