Otaki Forks road reopens after slip work

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 15/07/2016

Road access has been restored to a popular outdoors spot north of Wellington after seven months of earthworks.

Otaki Gorge Rd was closed late last year over concerns about the stability of the hillside, preventing access to Otaki Forks and the Department of Conservation's Otaki Forks Campsite.

In a $500,000 project, more than 70,000 cubic metres of debris and slip material has now been removed - which the Kapiti Coast District Council says could fill Paraparaumu's 25-metre pool 47 times.

"It's been massive job and we're delighted to get the road opened in time for the second week of the school holidays," said council infrastructure manager Sean Mallon.

"It's great news for Otaki and we know local businesses will be pleased to see visitors to the popular tourist attraction coming back into our district."

Two residents had also been affected by the road closure - a private property owned by the Campbell family and DOC's resident caretaker Steve Elgar.

The council was grateful for their patience and cooperation, Mr Mallon said.
