Two male trampers have been found dead on a track in Tararua Forest Park in Wairarapa.

The men, aged 39 and 32, were reported overdue by a family member around 7pm on Sunday.

Police say the pair headed out on an overnight tramp to Alpha Hut from the Waiohine Gorge campsite on Saturday morning, and were due back on Sunday evening.

Wairarapa Area Commander Inspector Donna Howard says a member of the public found one body about 10.25am on Monday.

Search and Rescue located the second body around 1.00pm a short distance away.

Both bodies have been recovered from the bush.

Insp Howard says weather in the area was generally good over the weekend, but temperatures did fall overnight, and police are working to establish what experience the pair had.

She says police will be investigating what happened on behalf of the coroner.
