Oyster cull for Stewart Island bay

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 9/06/2017

Flat oysters will be culled from Big Glory Bay in Stewart Island in an attempt to stop the spread of a lethal parasite.

The Ministry for Primary Industries confirmed the move on Friday.

Bonamia ostreae has been found in two of the marine farms in the bay.

"Science has strongly guided our decision," said MPI's Geoff Gwynn.

" The epidemiology of Bonamia ostreae, and the proximity of the two affected marine farms to others, means there is a strong risk of spread to those farms, and increasing the threat to the wild population."

Marine farmers can apply for compensation.

Bonamia ostreae has not yet been found in Bluff oysters in Foveaux Strait, however, MPI is continuing surveillance.
