Pacific islands need more help: Greens

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 9/05/2016

The government is being urged to increase its Pacific Island aid following the release of a new study showing how they're being affected by rising sea levels.

According to an Australian study, at least 11 islands across the northern Solomon Islands have either disappeared over recent decades or are currently experiencing severe erosion.

The study, published in Environmental Research Letters, said shoreline recession at two sites had destroyed villages.

Five small reef islands that weren't populated had vanished.

The Green Party says climate change isn't mentioned in the government's aid programme.

"It's clear climate change is still not on the government's radar, despite rising seas flooding the homes of people in the Pacific," said the party's Pacific affairs spokeswoman Marama Davidson.

"The government needs to ring-fence funding to assist the migration of communities at risk of rising seas and coastal erosion - even internal relocations are likely to be expensive and challenging exercises."
