Paddon claims early lead in Whangarei

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 29/04/2016

Hayden Paddon has forged a narrow lead in his class early in Rally Whangarei.

Less than a week after their historic World Rally Championship victory in Argentina, Paddon and co-driver John Kennard have adjusted quickly to home conditions.

They lead the national category in their adjusted Hyundai i20, having clocked 1min 41.1sec through two special stages at Pohe Island.

Paddon, who is 0.2sec ahead of Mitsubishi driver Sloan Cox, is using the event to relax between WRC events.

Rally Whangarei is part of the NZ Rally championship, which Paddon leads after winning the opening round in Otago in dominant style this month.

It is also the first leg of the Asia Pacific championship which is contested by drivers in an international class.

The early leader is Fabian Kreim of Germany in a Skoda.

There are eight further stages on Saturday and six on Sunday.
