Hayden Paddon minimised his losses to be fifth after the first full day of the Rally of Catalunya in Spain.

Kiwi Paddon placed second in the day's opening stage but incurred what he described as a technical issue which affected him for the remainder of the day.

His subsequent stage results were fourth, sixth, sixth, eighth and ninth on gravel roads which resembled a mudbath following torrential rain.

Paddon and co-driver John Kennard are among three Hyundai combinations in the top five, including popular leader Dani Sordo of Spain.

Sordo is 17 seconds clear of French world champion Sebastien Ogier and 47sec clear of Paddon.

The rally shifts to asphalt roads for the two remaining days.

Paddon is fourth on the drivers' standings with two rounds remaining after this week.
