Paddon hopeful win will help Rally NZ

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 27/04/2016

Hayden Paddon is optimistic that his win in Argentina will provide a persuasive argument for New Zealand to be back on the World Rally Championship calender.

"We certainly hope it will help a lot," Paddon said on his return to Auckland on Wednesday.

"That's definitely a personal target, of not just us but a lot of people, to get Rally New Zealand back."

The New Zealand event, noted for its flowing gravel roads and its scenic backdrop, was last part of the WRC calendar in 2012 after having been a regular fixture.

Paddon said 2018 was probably the most realistic year to aim for.

"We're speaking to a lot of people in Europe, to the teams, to the promoters, to [world motorsport body] the FIA constantly and I think things like this will certainly help," he said.

"There's a lot of other things that need addressing as well, but at the moment I think we have a reasonably good chance to try and get it it back. We just have to cross the Ts and dot the Is and keep pushing.

Motorsport NZ president Shane Harris said earlier this week that he hoped Paddon's victory would add impetus to the bid to have Rally NZ reinstated.
