Paddon returns for Rally Whangarei

NZN 25/04/2016

Hayden Paddon will back up his historic victory in the World Rally Championship by returning to compete in the national championship.

Paddon, 29, became the first New Zealand driver to top the podium in a WRC round with his win in Argentina on Monday.

He and co-driver John Kennard are heading straight from South America to contest Rally Whangarei, which begins on Friday night.

Paddon says he has fond memories of Northland, where he won his first rally in 2007.

"It's been a few years since we were last there but they are amazing roads," he said.

"Jumping over the huge cambers is an experience you get nowhere else."

The Hyundai driver leads the NZ Rally Championship after a dominant performance in the season opener round in early April.

He won Rally Otago by nine minutes and 22 seconds, a record margin for an NZ championship event.
