Hayden Paddon has one last shot at a perfect performance before the curtain comes down on a breakthrough year in the World Rally Championship.

Paddon and his Hyundai co-driver John Kennard are fourth heading into Rally Australia based around Coffs Harbour, the final round, and insist they won't make the same mistake as last year.

"We learned a valuable lesson here," Paddon said.

"Where we put too much pressure on ourselves for a particular result and we didn't perform well.

"This year the focus is on putting together the perfect performance and that's what we've worked on with our preparation."

The four-day rally starting on Thursday is one of his most favoured because of the local support.

The marathon 50km Nambucca stage is also one he relishes, comparing the gravel roads to what he would expect to encounter in New Zealand.

Paddon sits just three points behind third-placed Norwegian Andreas Mikkelsen in the standings but is trying not to think too much about the possibility of a podium finish overall.

"Of course it would be amazing to finish in the top three, but the focus is on our performance and letting the rally and overall championship result follow that."
