Jock Paget has a shot at his second four-star equestrian title after improving to fourth following the cross-country phase in Pau, France.

Riding Clifton Signature, Paget went clear on the technically-demanding course and accrued four time penalties to improve two places overall.

He sits on 48 penalty points, just 3.8 points behind German double Olympic champion Michael Jung on FischerRocana FST, who retained his overnight lead.

The top five riders are separated by the the fall of a single showjumping rail heading into Sunday's deciding phase.

Paget's only other four-star win was at the Badminton Horse Trials three years ago. He placed second in Pau a year earlier.

The two other Kiwis have no chance of winning.

Caroline Powell's two mounts, Flying Finish and Spice Sensation, are 26th and 28th respectively, more than 20 points behind Jung.

Tim Price, who was 11th after the dressage, fell from his mount Xavier Faer at the 22nd fence on the cross country course and was eliminated.
