Jock Paget's hopes of victory at the Pau four-star event in France disappeared when his mount Clifton Signature knocked down two rails in the showjumping phase.

New Zealander Paget dropped from fourth to seventh, ending any chance of his second four-star win.

He started within 3.8 penalty points of the lead but finished 10.7 behind French winner Maxime Livio, who went clear.

Livio, riding Qalao Des Mers headed off double Olympic champion Michael Jung of Germany, who claimed second and third on his two horses.

Kiwi Caroline Powell's two horses - Spice Sensation and Flying Finish -finished 26th and 27th respectively after both picked up time and rail faults on Sunday.

A third Kiwi, Tim Price, was eliminated in the cross-country phase.
