Pair rescued after ute stranded in river

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 11/05/2016

Water and alcohol don't mix and two people found that out for themselves after their ute got stuck in Hutt River.

The pair needed to be rescued from the roof of the vehicle on Wednesday night after they were stranded under Totara Park Bridge as water levels rose.

Lifejackets and ropes were handed to the pair and they were pulled out by a swift water rescue team with the help of police.

"Police are disappointed in the poor judgment shown by these individuals and the risk they posed to themselves and those coming to their rescue, by attempting to drive in the water in these conditions," a statement said.

Police said alcohol appeared to have played a role in the incident.
