A paraglider has died after crashing in Christchurch's Port Hills.

The person was killed after crashing into a road barrier near the top station of the Christchurch Gondola on Summit Road about 11.40am on Tuesday, police say.

A Civil Aviation Authority investigator is expected to visit the site on Tuesday, a spokesman said.

He said he understood there had been a witness to the crash and that the CAA investigator would speak with them as soon as he had the chance.

Ambulance and fire were also at the scene, with police saying no one else was involved in the crash.

The next of kin are being notified.
