"New Zealand is proud of you, inspired by you, and remains firmly behind you," he said when parliament convened on Tuesday.

"We celebrate what has been achieved."

Labour leader Andrew Little said the team did a superb job.

"They've shown anything is possible. We saw the old hands excelling in their chosen fields, and one of the most encouraging things was the number of young New Zealanders who performed so well."

The Green Party's Kevin Hague congratulated the team and noted most of the New Zealand medal winners were women.
