Parliament's first item of business on Tuesday afternoon was a resolution congratulating Team New Zealand for winning the America's Cup.

Prime Minister Bill English introduced it, speaking about the individuals who had achieved it and the importance of the victory to New Zealand.

Earlier, within minutes of the catamaran crossing the line, he had issued a statement praising the leadership, teamwork and technological brilliance that made the win possible.

Leaders of all the parties in parliament supported the resolution.

Labour leader Andrew Little said it was a fantastic performance.
