Parliament's forecourt and lawns, which have many visitors, are smokefree areas.

Speaker David Carter announced the extension on Thursday - the inside of parliament and the Beehive are already smokefree.

"The grounds of parliament are one of the most iconic and frequently visited outdoor public spaces," Mr Carter said.

"The extension of the smokefree boundary will greatly improve the experiences of precinct employees, and of the many visitors to parliament, by eliminating the presence of second-hand smoke.

A designated smoking area at the rear of parliament will remain.
