Paroled double killer back in jail

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 21/04/2016

A double killer who has spent half his life in prison is back behind bars for failing a drug test just weeks after being released on parole.

Leith Rex Ray was 19 when he and Gresham Marsh, then 22, murdered elderly Waikato couple John and Josie Harrisson in their home near Ngaruawahia in May 1994.

Mr Harrisson, 83, was shot four times and his wife, 72, was shot twice during a home invasion.

Both Ray and Marsh were sentenced to life imprisonment but Ray was granted parole under strict conditions on February 8 this year.

However, just a month after being released Ray failed mandatory drug test for a job, testing positive for methamphetamine. He denied using the illicit substance.

Ray was returned to jail after a hearing on April 12.

He will face the Parole Board again in August.
