Passenger taken to hospital from ship

An ill passenger on the Emerald Princess cruiseliner has been winched off by the Otago Rescue Trust helicopter and flown to Dunedin Hospital.

The woman became unwell and the helicopter was called about 10.40am on Sunday, a trust spokesman said.

He was unsure why the ship was not able to dock at Port Chalmers but there was fog at the time.

It's a huge vessel and it was like winching from a town, the spokesman said.

A crew member on the Emerald Princess died after a gas canister exploded on the vessel at Port Chalmers, Dunedin on February 9.
