New Zealand cyclist Patrick Bevin has pulled out of the Tour of Spain, succumbing to a hand injury midway through the 11th stage.

Following multiple crashes in the first week of racing, the Cannondale-Drapac rider's performance was hampered by an inability to grip the handlebars.

The 25-year-old's team said he had withdrawn from his maiden appearance at the Grand Tour event, which still has more than a week to run.

Compatriots George Bennett and Sam Bewley remain in the tour.

Team LottoNI-Jumbo rider Bennett has climbed to 19th on general classification after placing 24th on the mountainous 168.6km stage from Colunga to Pena Cabarga. He was 1min 35sec behind British stage winner Chris Froome.

Colombian Nairo Quintana was second behind Froome and continues to lead the Briton on general classification by 54sec. Bennett is nearly 8min behind Quintana overall.

Bewley, a support rider for Orica-BikeExchange, is more than two hours behind Quintana in 148th place.
