Paula Bennett has just one day in charge of the government and the Public Service Association is urging her not to waste it.

"We'd like to see a female PM - however short her tenure - do something concrete about equal pay," said PSA national secretary Erin Polaczuk.

"Cabinet has been dragging its feet on this, so what better time for a female acting prime minister to show leadership?.

Ms Bennett is ranked fifth in the cabinet and all those above her - John Key, Bill English, Gerry Brownlee and Steven Joyce - were out the country on Thursday.

Mr Brownlee is due back on Friday morning.

Ms Bennett told media she bought a new pair of shoes to celebrate the occasion.

"You can all rest easy - quite frankly I'm finding the job quite easy so far," she said.

"I'm going for a steady hand."
