A pensioner was fined £80 for pouring a cup of coffee down a drain in west London.

Sue Peckitt, 65, was handed an on-the-spot fine after she poured her drink away in Ealing in 2015 because she didn’t like the taste.

Ms Peckitt, who is a former civil servant, said she disposed of her coffee down the drain near Ealing Broadway shopping centre because she didn’t want to fill a public bin with liquid.

But as she walked toward a bin to dispose of the cup she said she was approached by two enforcement officers who told her what she had done was illegal.

Ms Peckitt told Go West London she was forced to fill out several forms and was fined £80.

“I am astonished by the whole process," she said.

"I think there is a big problem with litterbut it is bizarre, I had put this coffee down (the drain) because it was the safe and environmentally friendly thing to do.

"The reason I didn't dispose of the cup and the liquid in the bin was that I didn't want to turn the contents of the bin into a soggy mess."

Ealing Council has since said it would refund the original fine and is investigating the case.

A council spokesperson said: “The council has investigated this particular case and will be dropping the fine originally issued.

“Our priority is to make sure that the borough is clean and litter free and we apologise for any inconvenience that this may have caused.”
